Character[]

Personality[]

Mendanbar is the King of The Enchanted Forest and likes things simple, but is also very adventurous.

Description[]

Tall with black hair and gray eyes. He is twenty years old in Searching for Dragons when he makes his first appearance in the series.

He has black hair that is described as "a bit long" by Morwen and a "bird's nest" by the castle gargoyle and Cimorene. He has long legs and rarely wears a circlet or crown, except on official business such as visiting the King of Dragons, and wears clothes that are "plain as a gardener's." Despite this, he still manages to look like a king- this is credited to the "thoughtful expression in his grey eyes."

Biography[]

Searching for Dragons[]

He doesn't like formal parties, much to the disappointment of Willin, his steward. So avoided all of the meetings and parties that Willin wanted to hold, so that Mendanbar could meet the people and creatures living in The Enchanted Forest, which he later regrets, a little.

He is very busy as king, and Willin is very uptight. As such, he has not left the forest in three years, or since he became king. In this book he meets Cimorene.

He has a power over the Forest and can use the magic of it to find out anything that is happening or where anything is at in the Forst. There is a network of magic strands in the air, which he can't see, but he can pluck out of the air and use. Only Kings of the Enchanted Forest can do this, and only their family can hold the Sword.

When Mendanbar comes across an air-headed princess, he goes to investigate the barren waste that used to be a part of the forest.

Inside, he finds some dragon scales, in his quest to find out about the scales he mets several denizens of the forest, include a squirrel that tells Mendanbar that he needs to visit Morwen the witch and how to find her. Then he meets a Lion after the Lion tries to attack him, but Mendanbar uses the magic of the forest to hold the lion so they can have a conversation. The lion is the guardian of the Pool of Gold. Mendanbar disapproves the way the lion is guarding the pool and suggests that he change the way he is doing his job.

When Mendanbar arrives at Morwen's she disenchants the scales, and sends him to see Kazul, the King of Dragons.

He then gets a visit from Zemenar, the Head of the Society of Wizards, who tells him that the dragons might be attacking. He also says that Kazul's princess is a born troublemaker, which makes Mendanbar wary of this princess, but soon finds that Cimorene isn't like the other princesses he has met, meaning she is actually smart and very much to his liking.

He reluctantly joins Cimorene on her quest to find Kazul, and meets Ballimore and Dobbilan. Cimorene tells him not to eat the desert that the Cauldron of Plenty makes, because he wouldn't like it. After hearing what the deserts were, he agreed. The giants give Mendanbar and Cimorene a flying carpet with pink teddy bears on it, which neither talks about because Ballimore understands it's not the most attractive flying carpet. Unfortunately, the carpet is a little run down and unruly to use.

After escaping the rock snakes they meet Herman, who is in charge of a large group of children. After using, and accidentally breaking, the scrying window to locate Kazul. When Mendanbar and Cimorene leave, he tries to use a transportation spell to take them to the Enchanted Forest, but it doesn't work.

They meet Telemain, a magician, who helps them by taking them to Gypsy Jack to see if their flying carpet can be repaired. Of course, some wizards ruin the night by showing up, but they quickly melt them. Telemain joins them on their quest. They then head to Morwen's house to ask for her help in saving Kazul.

They free the King of the Dragons, but not with out a fight and a lot of melted wizards. He then asks Cimorene to marry him. Willin is over joyed by the news and makes preparations for it immediately. Mendanbar makes the spot where the ceremony is to take place stay in one spot so that the guests can find it.

Calling on Dragons[]

Later, he finds that his sword is missing and wants to retrieve it, but must unhappily stay in the Enchanted Forest, or the Wizards would steal all the magic while he is away. While Cimorene, Morwen, some cats, Killer, and Telemain are searching for the sword, Mendanbar repairs the damage done to the forest.

Unfortunately, he is captured by the wizards and hidden away, while the castle is encased in a bubble.

He has a son Daystar who is born after Mendanbar is imprisoned and sleeping, so he does not learn of Daystar's birth until much later.

Talking To Dragons[]

Sixteen years later, Daystar brings the Sword of the Sleeping King back to the castle and frees Mendanbar from Zemenar's spell.

Mendanbar then uses the sword and the forest's magic to question the captured wizards. After Daystar deals with Antorell, who had called forth a demon to attack Cimorene, he congratulates his son for a job well done, even if it was a bit of an over kill.

He then sets about putting things right in his kingdom, happy to see his friends and loved ones are safe. Though he thinks that Cimorene's claim that Shiara is the next queen of the forest, is a bit sudden.
